Kaitlyn’s Senior session video

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Here’s a quick video of Kaitlyn’s 2010 senior portrait session.

This was a great time with Kaitlyn and her mom in Fox Run Park last month. We couldn’t have asked for better weather and the location was perfect too.

If you’re considering doing senior portraits, or even family portraits, Fox Run Park is a great spot. There are 2 small lakes surrounded by trees and grass, and there’s a nice gazebo in the middle of one of the lakes. We’ve photographed 2 weddings on the gazebo.

If you’ve never been there, and you would like to check it out, to get to Fox Run, go north on Academy to Hwy. 83. Take this past New Life Church where 83 turns sharp right and if you keep going straight past New Life, you’re now on Voyager Pkwy. Take Voyager all the way to Northgate Rd. and turn right. At Roller Coaster Rd., turn left and stay on that until you get to Stella. At this intersection, you’ll see a sign for the park. Turn left on Stella and then an immediate right into the park. If you go left at the dead-end, follow the road around until you see the lakes on the right.

Fox Run has 5 miles of trails, sports fields, and a couple of great playgrounds for the smaller children.

Enjoy!

Ongoing relationships

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

This is what I love about my job.

Kevin and Brittany asked me to photograph their wedding 2 years ago, and we had a great time with the engagement session and the wedding itself, which was in Woodland Park.

Now, I recently was privileged to photograph their little daughter, Sarah. What a beauty!

Next, I will also be privileged to photograph Brittany’s sister’s wedding at Woodmen Valley’s Stone Chapel next June!

Here’s a slideshow I think you’ll enjoy even if you don’t know Sarah.

Enjoy!

Love in the House

Saturday, September 19th, 2009

Not long ago, the Jeub family asked me to do some photography for them. Wendy and Chris are both authors and need some professional portraits for their books. While I was there, I took some time to photograph life at their house with 13 children (with 2 others already out of the house). So, I put together a fun slideshow of that enjoyable afternoon.

Enjoy the show!

A Day in the Life of a Wedding Photographer

Saturday, September 19th, 2009
Not a promising weather outlook for Chris and Pamela's wedding, but everything worked out great!

Not a promising weather outlook for Chris and Pamela's wedding, but everything worked out great!

Recently, my assistant, Heather, and I arrived at the top of a mountain on a ranch west of Colorado Springs to photograph Pamela’s and Chris’ wedding, and this is what we saw when we got to the wedding location. It all looked so dramatic! There was a rain outburst and then it all cleared up for us to get the formal portraits done before the wedding. The weather held out during the wedding also, but as soon as we began to take the family portraits after the ceremony, it got nearly pitch dark, and began to dump on us again.

So, we high-tailed it down to the reception site that they had prepared on their property, and finished out the night without getting too wet!

And who says the life of a wedding photographer isn’t exciting or dangerous?

Hunting for the first time

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009
Our hunting location for the 4th rifle season this year

Our hunting location for the 4th rifle season this year

I’m 46 and I’ve never been hunting before.

There, I’ve admitted it.

So, my son, Benjamin, and I are planning our first trip this fall. It’s one of those things that I really want to begin doing with my sons. We all love the mountains, so it’s a good way for us to be out there and be together with a common goal besides just hiking.

Yesterday, we went to our hunting location to scout it out. It’s a beautiful part of the state and it’s behind private land, so the hunting pressure should be pretty low. Afterwards, we stopped by our friend Jim’s house to test out the rifles we’ll be using. Jim is the one taking us on our hunting trip and so we spent the whole day getting full lessons on the art and science of hunting.

So from November 28, to December December 5, our office will not be accepting any portrait

Benjamin experiences his first rifle shot and its kick, but, he nailed the target (a bowling pin) at 80 yards and split it in half!

appointments. We will be returning Emails and phone calls once a day, and we will make every effort to have everyone’s orders run and delivered before we leave. If you have any needs for portraits or portrait orders around that time of year, please give us a heads-up and we can make special arrangements for you.

Hopefully, later this fall, we’ll be able to report on a different kind of Wild Thing You Can Eat!

Thanks for reading.

Free Webinar on Fall Photography

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009
Check out the webinar sponsored by Bogen on capturing the Fall Colors.

Check out the webinar sponsored by Bogen on capturing the Fall Colors.

For those of you who love photography, but just can’t seem to get the hang of it, or those of you who aren’t creating the kinds of images you would like to create, here’s a free internet seminar (webinar) being put on by the folks at Bogen (Bogen is a tripod manufacturer). This webinar will instruct us on getting great images of the fall colors, and comes just in time. Have you noticed that the trees around town are beginning to turn already? I was on Pikes Peak last month, and many of  the shrubs and bushes were turning yellow.

If you’re unfamiliar with how a webinar works, you simply sign in to the conference at the specified time, and the instructor’s presentation appears on your screen. You can even interact with the instructor and others by “virtually” raising your hand, and asking questions.

If you miss anything, don’t worry, because it’s all recorded and you can go back and listen to the entire presentation again.

Webinars are a great way to pick up tips and bits of knowledge on many subjects of interest.

So, if you’re interested in fall nature photography, why not take advantage of a free class full of tips on how to get better images from your outings? I plan to sign up for this one.

Portrait session at Bear Creek

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

Joey and Brett at Bear Creek Nature Center

This portrait session of these two boys couldn’t have turned out better. It was late in the afternoon so the sun was low and golden. It was being filtered nicely through the trees and providing a great hair light on the boys. In the studio, the photographer has to set up an extra light behind his subjects to provide the hair light, but this was there for free! :-)

This is one of my all-time favorite images. The boys’ mother, Susan, took our input on the clothing selection and that adds to the great look and feel of the portrait.

It was a great time and we captured some really neat images of the boys together and individually. It was actually the older brother’s birthday that day. He and his little brother were great subjects for the day, and each got a little prize from Tracy when we were all done. (OK, some times we call it a bribe… but these 2 did so well, we didn’t need to bribe them!) :-)

I love what their mom had to say after we showed her the portraits:

There aren’t too many things in life that turn out as you expect them to, but this experience has been far more than I could have expected! I’ve always dreamed of having beautiful, outdoor portraits of the children. Tracy, you didn’t disappoint! I love the portraits of the boys!

Megan’s Senior Session

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009
Megan and her mom, Tammie, loved this image from Megan's recent portrait session

Megan and her mom, Tammie, loved this image from Megan's recent portrait session

Congratulations, Megan, on your very successful senior session.

We got to use a cool new location that I found a few weeks ago to do Megan’s session. There are about a dozen different looks and settings all within one square block in this new location.

Megan even had a fun time and enjoyed getting to be a model for an hour or so.

Not only will Megan and her mom be getting some great enlargements from the session, but they’re also getting a cool collage (we call them panels) with 4 of their favorite images, and the image you see on the left will appear on the front of Megan’s graduation announcements for her to send to family and close friends. That way, their family and friends get the announcement, but then also get a nice, real photo to frame, not just some wallet photo to stick on the fridge!

Megan’s mom loved the results, and had this to say about the portraits:

Oh my gosh! These portraits are so cool! That is just who Megan is. I mean… you really captured Megan’s personality. Thank you so much!
Tammie Grevin,
Colo. Springs

We’ve got even more senior portraits from the classes of ‘10 from around Colorado Springs, and even Falcon and Peyton which we’ll be posting here in the next few days.

Thanks for reading!
